Why Should You Care If Anyone Opens Your Email?
Building and Managing an Effective Email Marketing Program

with Michelle Price
Publisher & Editor-in-Chief of SellMoreBooks.com

Use Strategy

  • Define how the email marketing campaign fits into your business model
  • What is your business model? (your bottom line business goals)
  • Avoid "drive by" email marketing (just sending an email that doesn't build relationships)
  • How will you turn subscribers into cash flows?
  • What is the best type of offer to meet your goals? A giveaway? Newsletter? Paid services?

Example Scenario

You sell a business building system ($997 program with back-end coaching program) and your goal is "lead generation." You want to build 100,000 targeted readers (and they are readers - people who like to read your emails). Your primary marketing tool is an e-newsletter.

  1. Content strategy - what kind of content are you going to include in each newsletter to keep people wanting to read your newsletter?
  2. Plan a series of lead generation campaigns to build in-house list
  3. Submit articles online to publications and directories (see special section below)
  4. Google @ words
  5. Joint venture swaps, trade-outs "I send a message to your list, you send to mine"
  6. Newsletter subjects that beg to be opened - be creative!
  7. Newsletter content centers around one main article
  8. Each newsletter issue has 2 offers
    1. Offer #1 - links to landing page and a sign-up for free recorded teleseminar (or some other appropriate service). Use the Full Partner prospect data form. Readers automatically receive a series of emails that accelerates sales.
    2. Offer #2 - buy the whole system.
  9. Track your offers!!!

Target Market for your Subscriber List

  • Research upfront before deciding how to build a list - in-depth keyword research
  • Use article distributions
  • Targeted lead generation offer - it has to be something that they want
  • Know who exactly you are talking to
  • Peruse e-zine article databases - possibly send article to a publisher if their list is relevent to you
  • Go for something they can download and read and follow up with an autoresponder - to help them consume what they download. "On page 9 we talked about such-and-such." PDF file is best.
  • Online courses are less effective products now - readers are too inundated. Try something else.
  • Podcasting can also be very effective - create and upload mps's
  • Autoresponders - leverage your marketing. They take heavy lifting to create the first time, but every product that has a "back-end" should have this series to help upsell them to the next thing. The best time to hit people is when they've just purchased from you. It costs much more to go out and find a new client than someone who has just purchased from you. Very handy tool.

Article Announcement Lists - Posting Your Articles

You have to first get a Yahoo ID to join the first four on the list in order to post your articles. Click on the links and then there is a "Join" button at the top right of the page. Use your name as your Yahoo! ID if at all possible, every little bit of branding helps. Also, you'll automatically be given a Yahoo.com email address to go with your ID, so use it to subscribe to each of the groups 1-4 below.

These are high volume lists, when you subscribe you are given the option to receive in Digest mode, which I suggest you do (you also have the option to subscribe and Read on the Web, but if you choose that option, you won't be allowed to post articles which defeats the purpose).

All four of these article announcement lists are moderated, meaning there is a human on the other end, checking your submission. Read the Guidelines before posting your articles (I've included a link to Guidelines where indicated)

Michelle Price, Publisher & Editor-in-Chief of SellMoreBooks.com
An expert on how to maximize your email broadcasting

Michelle is the secret weapon behind many successful business people. Her specialty is helping information entrepreneurs find and attract their perfect online readers, then create follow-up systems that immediately boost visitor response and build online marketing momentum for their books and also generate leads for their business.

In 2003, Michelle was behind-the-scenes helping to mastermind for an unknown entrepreneurial author of a new personal development book. She found the perfect online market, and working with a world-class group of well-known professionals, mapped the process and systems to support the internet strategy that sold 1,500 books in 3 days, added 1,100 people to his opt-in email list and ultimately gave him traction that helped to launch his book onto three national bestseller lists within 6 weeks of his book being published. How did she accomplish such a feat when she'd never done it before? She simply transferred over 10 years of success as a Continuous Improvement (a.k.a. Six Sigma) facilitator and instructional designer in healthcare administration at a Top 25 U.S. academic healthcare center, specializing in IT and infrastructure. In fact, just one project she worked on saved $1M in staffing costs, increased productivity AND improved customer service.

She just applied what she knew about process improvement to the Internet publishing and book promotion industry, for the benefit of her client. They then turned the same $20 book into a $75,000 weekend seminar profit center - within the same year... Michelle Price is a results oriented system-thinker. She's a former instructional designer and Certified Continuous Improvement facilitator who has transferred 10+ years of experience with improving outpatient service in healthcare and productivity in high tech business to Internet marketing and eCommerce, becoming an expert in improving marketing, customer engagement and ecommerce systems that drive bottom-line business revenue.

Michelle is a member of the National Association of Female Executives, and was recently nominated for the 2005 Top 25 Black Business Women in America Award.
