When I was a teenager, I had a job collating a weekly shopper news flyer. The couple who published it supplemented their income by selling advertising space in their paper. Affiliate advertising works along the same lines. If you provide the space for the advertising on your website, you can earn money for doing so by becoming an affiliate of the company that is doing the advertising.

Many websites these days and I've even noticed some blogs, too, have advertisements displayed on their pages.
