How to create a Split Test Campaign

Split Testing is one of the most powerful marketing tools on the Internet.  If there is one secret to success online that every Internet marketing expert will agree on, it is to 'track and test everything'.  Your Split Testing system is a powerful tool that helps you do just that.

What Is A Split Test Campaign?

A Split Test Campaign tracks clicks on a Virtual Page Link that has two or more pages on your website as the possible destination. These pages might have different content on them that you want to test for effectiveness. When a Split Test Campaign link is clicked the system will direct the visitor to one of the destination pages at random. If you have 3 destination pages in your campaign, then 1/3 of the visitors will go to page A, 1/3 to page B and 1/3 to page C.  A cookie is set when the visitor clicks on the Split Test Campign link so that future clicks from that visitor go to the original destination page.

Here are the properties that define a Split Test Campaign:

Campaign Name: this is a required property that is for your use to identify this campaign.

Destination Pages: Click the Browse button to locate a page on your website.  It is required that you have at least 2 destination pages.

Virtual Page Name:  Specify any easy to remember string that will then become a Virtual Page on your website. You will use this Virtual Page as the launching point for the Split Test Campaign. For example if you put "BigSale" as the Virtual Page Name, then the Split Test Campaign link will be http://www.MyDomainName.com/BigSale

  • IMPORTANT: The Virtual Page Name must be unique in the Links database and may not be one of these system keywords: includes, images, log, documentFiles, email, multimedia, public, temp, utility, verity, or the name of any Site Model or real folder on the root of your website directory

Promotion Code: This is very important, you must create a new Promotion Code for your Split Test Campaign Virtual Page Link.  Make-up a PID Code that is unique and does not contain spaces or special characters. The simplest approach is to use the ObjectID of the Split Test Campaign Link Object (found in the upper left of the editor) and prefix with one or two letters that describe the source, e.g. g102 for Google.

  • Important: If you have the Affiliate Marketing Package, then do not use Affiliate Codes for PID Codes. This is because the system uses the Promotion Tracker to record Traffic Reports for the Affiliates and the Affiliate Code is used as the PID Code.

Access & Testing - Testing your link: It is very important that you test your Split Test Campaign link before you publish it on the Internet or in an Email. To test is simple, just click on the Save button and you will see near the bottom of the editor a section named Access & Testing. Here your Virtual Page Link will be displayed for you to copy (drag your mouse over it and press CTRL + C to copy into your paste buffer) and then paste into an email (CTRL + V will copy your paste buffer). Below the link you will see:

  • "click here" to test now. You should click on this link and watch the page come up in  a new browser window. Wait a moment then click again, wait a moment then click again. Each time you click you will see one of the Destination Pages displayed.  The Destination Pages are selected at random so you could get the same page twice or more during your testing, but if you test enough, perhaps 10 or 20 times, you will see a fairly even distribution.
